Eurovision 2026 Faces Major Boycott Over Israel's Participation

Four countries—Ireland, Spain, Netherlands, and Slovenia—have withdrawn from Eurovision 2026 after organizers decided to allow Israel to compete, citing concerns over the Gaza war and voting irregularities. The decision exposes deep divisions in what is typically a celebration of unity through music.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) held a crucial meeting in Geneva on Thursday where members voted to implement new voting rules designed to prevent government manipulation, but declined to hold a vote on Israel's participation. Instead, the EBU ruled that all broadcasters complying with the new rules are eligible to compete in Vienna's 2026 contest.

Spain, one of Eurovision's "Big Five" major financial contributors, joined Ireland, the Netherlands, and Slovenia in announcing boycotts. These countries cited the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where over 70,000 people have died according to Palestinian health authorities, as well as concerns about journalistic freedom and voting integrity. Israel's President Isaac Herzog praised the decision, calling it "a victory over those who seek to silence Israel," while Israeli broadcaster KAN denied any improper campaign activities following allegations about the 2025 contest where Israel's entry placed second.
