A woman in the Philippines earns under $2 an hour pretending to be an OnlyFans model in intimate chats, questioning her own conscience while the platform generates billions.
What's happening
A BBC investigation has revealed the working conditions of OnlyFans "chatters," workers hired by third-party agencies to impersonate content creators in subscriber conversations. A Philippines-based woman described earning under $2 per hour while working eight-hour shifts, five days a week, with targets to generate hundreds of dollars per shift for the models she impersonated. A later position offered improved conditions but still paid less than $4 per hour. OnlyFans generated $7.2 billion in gross revenue in 2024. The worker described the toll of the role plainly: "You're going to question yourself. Your morality, even, and even your conscience." Legal cases brought against the platform and agencies over the use of chatters have so far been unsuccessful. The BPO Industry Employees' Network (BIEN) union has raised concerns about the "largely unregulated nature of this type of online work" and workers' exposure to "potentially egregious or harmful content."
What the text says
When James wrote to wealthy landowners in the first century, he described a specific kind of injustice: laborers who had done the work but had not received fair payment for it. "The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you," he wrote. "The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty" James 5:4Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies..
The passage is striking because of what it holds together. There is a worker. There is work completed. And there is someone who profited from that work while the worker went without. James does not soften the language. He calls the wages themselves a witness. They cry out.
The OnlyFans chatter economy follows a strikingly similar pattern. A woman sits at a screen for eight hours, performing emotional and sexual labor under someone else's name, generating revenue she will barely share in. The platform processes $7.2 billion. The agency takes its cut. The model collects. The chatter receives less than $2 an hour and absorbs the psychological weight of deception she did not design.
James places the responsibility not on the worker but on those who built the arrangement. The wages are evidence. The structure testifies against itself James 5:1Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming on you..
The reflection
This woman said it herself: "It's really kind of heart-breaking, especially knowing that the agency is getting way more." She was not making a theological argument. She was describing her life. But the shape of her experience fits an ancient pattern that Scripture already had words for. Somewhere between a screen in the Philippines and a $7 billion platform, there is a gap. And in that gap, a person is asking what this work is doing to her soul.
