Russia Chose Escalation Over Easter

What's happening

On Easter weekend, Russia launched hundreds of drones and missiles across Ukraine, killing at least six civilians and injuring 40. The strikes came days after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for a holiday ceasefire. "The Russians have only intensified their strikes, turning what should have been silence in the skies into an Easter escalation," Zelensky said. Orthodox Easter, observed by both nations, falls next weekend. US-mediated peace talks have been postponed twice. Ukraine has raised concerns that Patriot missile defense systems may be diverted to the expanding conflict with Iran, leaving Ukrainian cities more exposed. The timing was precise: the attack struck when the expectation of mercy was highest.

What the text says

Isaiah 58 records God confronting worshipers who observe holy days while perpetuating violence. The people fast and bow their heads, yet on the day of their fast they exploit their workers and strike each other.

Isaiah 58:3'Why have we fasted,' [say they], 'and you don't see? [why] have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge?' "Behold, in the day of your fast you find pleasure, and exact all your labors.

Isaiah 58:4Behold, you fast for strife and contention, and to strike with the fist of wickedness: you don't fast this day so as to make your voice to be heard on high.

The prophet insists that sacred time carries moral obligation. A holy day is not a gap in the calendar. It is a claim on human behavior. God does not ask whether the ritual was performed correctly. God asks what was done to the vulnerable while the ritual was underway.

The Sabbath tradition deepens this. In Genesis, even God rests on the seventh day. The command to cease is woven into creation itself. To weaponize a holy day, to choose the moment of expected stillness for maximum destruction, inverts the logic of sacred time. It treats the other side's reverence as a tactical opening.

Isaiah 58:6"Isn't this the fast that I have chosen: to release the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?

Isaiah defines true observance: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to let the oppressed go free. Holy time, in the prophetic tradition, is measured by what it produces in the world.

The reflection

A ceasefire request on Easter is not naive. It draws on the oldest conviction in both Russian and Ukrainian Christianity: that certain days belong to God, and what belongs to God cannot be conscripted for war. When a nation bombs civilians on the day it shares their faith, the violation is not only military. It is liturgical. The question for every tradition that claims holy time is whether the calendar still makes demands on those who observe it.
