Millions Withdraw. An Ancient Prophet Did Too.

A global study finds 8% of people experience severe social withdrawal. Scripture's most famous hermit wasn't diagnosed. He was fed.

What's happening

Hikikomori, a Japanese term for severe social withdrawal lasting months or years, is no longer confined to Japan. A 2025 meta-analysis published in Psychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, reviewing 19 studies and 58,229 participants, found a global prevalence of 8%. The condition has been documented in at least 19 countries, including South Korea, Italy (where an estimated 100,000 young people live in withdrawal), Brazil, and the United States. In Japan alone, over one million people across all age groups are estimated to live in near-total isolation. Researchers found no significant difference in prevalence between East Asian and Western populations, or between men and women. The condition is not classified as a psychiatric disorder in the DSM-5. Public debate now centers on a pointed question: whether mass withdrawal signals individual illness or a collective response to economies that punish participation and societies that reward performance over belonging.

What the text says

After defeating the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, Elijah receives a death threat from Jezebel and does something the text does not pathologize. He runs. He sits under a broom tree and asks God to take his life. Then he walks forty days into the wilderness and enters a cave.

1 Kings 19:9He came there to a cave, and lodged there; and behold, the word of Yahweh came to him, and he said to him, "What are you doing here, Elijah?" "Behold, Yahweh's word came to him, and he said to him, 'What are you doing here, Elijah?'"

The question is not a rebuke. God had already sent bread and water to Elijah while he slept. The provision came before the question. And the question came before any instruction to return. God does not treat the cave as a problem to solve. He treats it as a place where a person can be met.

Elijah's withdrawal follows a pattern the psalms know well. Psalms 142:4Look on my right, and see; for there is no one who is concerned for me. Refuge has fled from me. No one cares for my soul. "Look on my right hand, and see; for there is no one who is concerned for me. Refuge has failed me. No one cares for my soul." The psalmist names the experience without apology: the world has become a place where no one turns toward me.

Scripture holds withdrawal as a real human station. It neither romanticizes nor diagnoses it. It sends bread.

The reflection

When millions of people across nineteen countries arrive independently at the same conclusion, that the world outside is not worth entering, something larger than individual psychology is speaking. The research cannot yet say what that something is. But the ancient pattern is instructive. Before God gave Elijah a mission, before any talk of return, there was food and sleep and a question asked without urgency. The cave was not the failure. The failure was a world that made the cave make sense. What would it mean to build societies where the first response to withdrawal is not diagnosis but presence, where someone asks without demanding an answer: what are you doing here?
