Meta and Microsoft cut 20,000 jobs in a single week, citing AI. The companies building the tools are the first to be replaced by them.
What's happening
On April 23, Meta announced it will lay off approximately 8,000 employees, 10 percent of its workforce, with cuts beginning May 20. The same week, Microsoft revealed plans for voluntary buyouts affecting roughly 7 percent of US employees. Both companies explicitly cited AI automation as enabling the reductions, particularly in content moderation, customer support, software testing, and certain engineering roles. Meta's internal memo linked the layoffs directly to "offset the other investments we're making" in AI. Q1 2026 tech layoffs have reached 78,557, with 47.9 percent attributed to AI displacement. Meanwhile, entry-level tech job postings have collapsed 73 percent year over year. A Harvard study examining 62 million workers found that junior positions are "shrinking at companies integrating AI," eroding the bottom rungs of career ladders that once produced the experienced workers these companies now claim they cannot find.
What the Text says
Work in Genesis is given before the fall. It is not punishment. It is purpose.
Genesis 2:15Yahweh God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
The Hebrew avad means to work, to serve. Shamar means to guard, to keep. The human being is placed in the garden with a vocation: tend this, protect this. The mandate assumes the worker has a place and the work has meaning. When companies eliminate positions by the thousand and describe the workers as costs to be "offset," they have detached labor from purpose and reduced it to a line item. James addressed this directly.
James 5:4Behold, the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you have kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Armies.
The Greek apostereo means to defraud, to withhold what is owed. James does not qualify the accusation with economic complexity. He does not ask whether the employer had a strategic plan. The wages cry out. The workers at Meta built the platforms that generated the revenue that funded the AI that replaced them. They were not incidental to the enterprise. They were the enterprise. The text assigns moral weight to the relationship between labor and compensation that quarterly earnings calls cannot erase. The career ladder has not been reformed. It has been removed.
The reflection
The companies building the future of work have decided their own workers have no future in it. Content moderators, testers, junior engineers: the roles that once constituted the entry point to a career have been declared redundant by the people who profited from them. Entry-level postings have dropped 73 percent. The ladder has been pulled up. James heard the wages of the workers crying out from the fields. The question for a generation trained for jobs that no longer exist is whether anyone is listening.
