NASA found 21 organic molecules on Mars, seven never seen there before. The building blocks of life are present. Whether life was present remains unknown.
What's happening
NASA published results in Nature Communications on April 21 revealing that the Curiosity rover discovered 21 organic molecules in a Martian rock sample from Gale Crater, including seven never before detected on the planet. The sample was drilled in October 2020 from the "Mary Anning 3" formation and analyzed using a first-ever wet-chemistry experiment on another world. These carbon-containing compounds, the building blocks of life, have been preserved for 3.5 billion years. Scientists cannot determine whether the molecules were produced by biological or geological processes. The distinction matters enormously: one answer means Mars once harbored life, the other means chemistry alone produced the conditions for it. Both possibilities unsettle. The Curiosity team described the find as "the most diverse set of organic molecules ever identified on Mars."
What the Text says
The heavens, according to the Psalmist, are already speaking. The problem has never been silence.
Psalm 19:1-41The heavens declare the glory of God. The expanse shows his handiwork.2Day after day they pour forth speech, and night after night they display knowledge.3There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.4Their voice has gone out through all the earth, their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun,
The speech of creation is not restrained or coded. It is abundant. Day after day, night after night, the sky produces testimony. The Psalmist then adds a strange qualifier: "There is no speech, nor are there words." The testimony is real. The language is not ours. Mars has now offered 21 molecules that say something about the history of that planet. We can detect them. We cannot yet interpret them. The book of Job addresses this gap directly.
Job 38:4"Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Declare, if you have understanding.
God's response to Job is not information. It is confrontation. Where were you? The question does not prohibit investigation. It establishes proportion. The organic molecules on Mars are 3.5 billion years old. They predate every human language, every instrument capable of finding them, every theology capable of interpreting them. The text insists that creation's testimony precedes and exceeds human capacity to receive it.
The reflection
The discovery will be conscripted into familiar arguments. Materialists will claim it diminishes the need for a creator. Creationists will claim it proves nothing. Both responses arrive too quickly. Twenty-one molecules sat in Martian rock for 3.5 billion years, waiting for a machine built by creatures who have existed for three hundred thousand. The Psalmist would not have been surprised. The heavens have always been saying more than we can hear.
