The People Who Stop Looking

April's jobs report looked stable. Underneath, labor force participation hit a four-year low. Jeremiah named the gap between healing and the wound.
What's happening
The April 2026 jobs report, released Thursday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed 115,000 jobs added and unemployment steady at 4.3%. Inside the same release: labor force participation fell for the fifth consecutive month to 61.8%, the lowest since 2021. Involuntary part-time work rose 445,000 in a single month, to 4.9 million.
The information sector has shed 342,000 jobs, 11% of the sector, since its late-2022 peak, a loss economists attribute to some combination of pandemic over-hiring and AI substitution. Iran-war fuel costs are beginning to flow through. The headline was stable. The composition was not.
What the Text says
Jeremiah is writing in the years before Jerusalem fell, when the city's economic indicators were holding.
Jeremiah 6:13-1413"For from the least of them even to the greatest of them, everyone is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely.14They have healed also the hurt of my people superficially, saying, 'Peace, peace!' when there is no peace.
The Hebrew translated "lightly" is qalal, to make small or to make light. It is the verb you use for putting your thumb on the scale. The wound was real. Jeremiah's complaint is that the priests measured it with instruments that could not see it. "Peace, peace" is what the indicators said. The instruments were not measuring what was breaking. The kingdom held its surface stability for another generation, and then it did not.
The reflection
Labor force participation is a measurement choice. It counts the people who are looking. It does not count the people who have stopped.
Involuntary part-time work counts the people who wanted full-time and could not find it; the ones who took the part-time job after being laid off do not show up in the unemployment number. A headline of 4.3% can hold steady while the people behind it stop being part of what the headline measures. Indicators are instruments.
The biblical concern is the people who have fallen outside what any instrument is built to see.
