Five Kurdish parties unified. A London congress warned against revenge. James names the math nations almost never choose.

For judgment is without mercy to him who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

James 2:13

On May 29, The Christian Science Monitor's editorial board ran a piece called "An Iran rebuilt on mercy." It reported something quiet but unusual. Opposition groups in exile, who agree on very little else, have been arriving at the same question this spring. If the Islamic Republic falls, what happens to the people who served it.

Five Iranian Kurdish parties unified in February. A new Iran Freedom Congress met in London with a public warning against collective revenge. The grievances are real and recent. The executions are still happening. The question on the table is what comes the day after.

James writes one of the shortest sentences on this subject in the whole New Testament. Mercy triumphs over judgment. The Greek word for triumphs is a wrestling word. The image is two figures locked together in the ring, and mercy walks out winning on points.

It almost never wins in politics. South Africa swallowed a version of it after apartheid. Chile got partway. Germany was forced into it. Every country that refused produced a generation that nursed the next wound.

The Iranian exiles in London are being asked, while the regime is still standing, whether they can already start picking the harder option. The verse does not pretend mercy is easy. It says mercy is what is still standing at the end.
