Berkeley mapped the brain circuit that rebuilds the body during deep sleep. A parable about a sleeping farmer says the growth that matters arrives as gift.

God's Kingdom is as if a man should cast seed on the earth, and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, though he doesn't know how.

Mark 4:26-27

On September 8, 2025, Berkeley News reported that Yang Dan's lab had traced the brain circuit that releases growth hormone during deep sleep. The finding circulated again in a June 26, 2026 write-up, which is how it reached most of us.

The picture it draws is strange. As you drop into deep non-REM sleep, neurons in the hypothalamus release a surge of growth hormone, one cluster pressing the accelerator and another easing the brake. The hormone loops back to the part of the brain that keeps you awake, and when the surge climbs too high it tips you back toward waking. The system tunes itself. This is the hormone that lays down muscle and bone, burns fat, and clears the ground for the next day's thinking.

None of it waits for your permission. You lie down, let go of the day, lose track of yourself, and are rebuilt by machinery you neither started nor steer.

Jesus once compared the kingdom of God to a man who scatters seed and then sleeps and rises while it grows, and the line he lands on is that the farmer does not know how. The growth is real, the mechanism is hidden, and the sleeper adds nothing to it. He is not giving a lesson in botany, and the neuroscience does not confirm the parable. What the finding does is let you feel the shape of the old story inside your own body.

That shape is the whole point. We are trained to prize the things we drive, measure, and earn. The parable says the growth that matters most arrives as gift, on a clock you did not set, from a power you do not run. Your body has been making that argument every night of your life, building what you need while you sleep through the entire thing.
