These are the serpent's words, spoken to the woman in the garden of Eden. God had given the humans the run of the garden and freedom to eat from every tree but one, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The serpent is answering that single limit.

God had warned that eating from that tree would bring death. The serpent says the opposite. You will not die. Your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God. It is the first lie in the Bible, and like most lies that work, it is wrapped around a piece of truth. Their eyes are opened. They do come away knowing something they did not know before.

The phrase "knowing good and evil" is easy to misread. In Hebrew, naming two opposites like this, good and evil, is a way of saying the whole range, everything in between. So the promise is not mainly about learning facts. It is about the power to decide for yourself what counts as good and what counts as evil, instead of receiving that from God. The serpent is offering moral independence, the chance to be your own authority.

That is what makes it a temptation and not just a trick. The pull is upward, toward more. The next verse says the fruit looked good and desirable for gaining wisdom. What the serpent leaves out is the cost. The two humans reach for a godlike knowledge and come away carrying shame, fear, and a garden they can no longer stay in.

The verse has lasted because it names a pull that did not stay in the garden. Underneath the reach for knowledge sits a quieter wish, to be the authority behind it, to be the one who decides what good and evil are.
