Northwestern University Settles with Trump Administration for $75 Million

Northwestern University reached a landmark agreement with the federal government, paying $75 million over three years to restore $790 million in frozen research funding and end multiple investigations. The deal represents the university's strategic decision to avoid lengthy legal battles while maintaining academic independence, though critics question whether federal pressure is reshaping campus autonomy.

Northwestern University and the Trump administration finalized a three-year settlement agreement on Friday that will restore hundreds of millions in federal research funding frozen since April 2025. The deal requires Northwestern to pay $75 million to the U.S. Treasury and implement policy changes including mandatory antisemitism training, stricter protest guidelines, and termination of the 2024 Deering Meadow agreement with pro-Palestinian protesters. The funding freeze had already forced Northwestern to cut 425 positions and contributed to the resignation of former president Michael Schill in September. Interim President Henry Bienen emphasized the university maintained "hard red lines" protecting its autonomy over hiring, admissions, and curriculum decisions, stating "Northwestern runs Northwestern." The settlement permanently closes investigations by the Departments of Justice, Education, and Health and Human Services into alleged discrimination and failure to protect Jewish students during Gaza war protests. Northwestern is the sixth elite university to settle with the administration, following similar deals at Cornell, Brown, Columbia and others.
