What 1 Peter 3:9 means
Peter tells believers not to pay back insults and harm with more of the same, and to respond with a blessing instead.
First Peter was written to Christians scattered across the Roman world who were facing hostility and mistreatment for their faith. In this line the writer tells them how to answer that treatment: rather than trading insult for insult or harm for harm, they are to respond with a blessing. He roots it in their own calling, saying they were called to this so that they might themselves inherit a blessing.
It is a hard instruction that refuses the natural cycle of retaliation and replaces it with something that can actually break the cycle.
