What Amos 5:24 means
God rejects Israel's religious festivals and asks instead for justice that flows constantly, like a river that never runs dry.
Amos was a shepherd sent to preach in a prosperous, outwardly religious Israel whose courts were failing the poor; earlier in the chapter (verse 12) he names bribes and the needy pushed aside. In verses 21 to 23 God refuses the nation's festivals, offerings and songs. He has heard enough music.
Verse 24 is what he wants instead: justice like rivers, righteousness like a stream that never fails. In that dry land most streambeds ran only after rain, so the picture is of a current that keeps flowing in every season. Justice, in this chapter, is what still reaches people after the music stops.
