What Colossians 3:16 means
Paul tells the church to let Christ's message live in them so richly that it overflows into teaching one another and singing with gratitude.
Paul is writing to a young church in the town of Colossae, describing what everyday life together should look like. 'Dwell' is a house word: the message is invited to move in and take up residence, with room to spare.
The result he expects is communal. Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs were how a community with few books carried what it believed; by singing, people taught and corrected one another. And the tone of the whole passage is gratitude: singing 'with grace in your heart' means letting the memory of what God has done turn into music.
