What Ezekiel 16:6 means
It is God finding an abandoned newborn left to die and speaking life over her, a picture of rescue the child did nothing to earn.
The prophet Ezekiel is speaking to Israelites in exile who felt God had given up on them. To reach them, he tells the story of their beginning as if it were a person: a baby girl born and immediately thrown out into an open field, her cord still uncut, unwashed and unwanted, left in her own blood to die. No one pitied her.
Then someone passes by. Instead of stepping over her, he speaks a single word: live. The whole force of the verse sits in that word. The child could not save herself and had done nothing to deserve saving. Life came to her as a gift, spoken by someone who simply refused to let her die.
