What John 6:12 means
After feeding a huge crowd, Jesus tells his disciples to collect every leftover scrap so that nothing goes to waste.
This happens right after Jesus feeds thousands of people from a few loaves and fish. With the crowd satisfied, you might expect the leftovers to be forgotten. Instead Jesus tells the disciples to gather up the broken pieces so that nothing is lost, and they fill twelve baskets.
The detail is small but telling. Even in the middle of astonishing abundance, there is a care that nothing good be thrown away. It shows a generosity that is never careless, and a God who values even the fragments.
