The government called it one of the largest child-privacy settlements in history. For a company the size of TikTok, the real question is whether a fine changes anything.

For three transgressions of Israel, yes, for four, I will not turn away its punishment… they have sold the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals.

Amos 2:6

On Friday, August 21, the Justice Department announced that TikTok and its parent company ByteDance will pay $400 million to settle claims they harvested personal data from millions of children under 13. Officials called it one of the largest child-privacy recoveries in American history. Set against a company the size of ByteDance, it is still closer to a rounding error.

And the settlement ends on a familiar note. The claims are "allegations only," with "no determination of liability." Money moves. Nobody did anything wrong.

Amos is describing corrupt judges, not an app. But the charge carries. Israel's powerful had learned to sell the vulnerable for almost nothing, and the "pair of sandals" is the detail that cuts. It names the price. The poor were not lost for some vast fortune. They went for the cost of footwear. The scandal is the smallness of the number.

This is what happens when a penalty is small enough to absorb. The practice gets a price, and a price is not a prohibition. It is a line item.

Jesus saved his hardest words for anyone who harms the young.

Matthew 18:6but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to stumble, it would be better for him that a huge millstone should be hung around his neck, and that he should be sunk in the depths of the sea.

The millstone was not a random horror. It was how you ground grain into bread and into a living, the engine of an ordinary economy. Jesus takes that everyday machine and makes it the weight that drowns a man. Commerce, turned into judgment.

Children are not the customers here. Their attention is the crop, harvested and milled and sold. A fine you can pay and keep operating asks what a childhood is worth, sets the figure, and lets you write the check.
