Forty-seven states, $17 billion, a declared win for child safety. The researchers who study these platforms are not sure anything a child sees has changed.
They have healed also the hurt of my people superficially, saying, 'Peace, peace!' when there is no peace.
Jeremiah 6:14
On Wednesday, August 26, Meta agreed to pay $17.1 billion to settle the child-safety lawsuit brought by forty-seven states over Facebook and Instagram. The company will cap endless scrolling, block teenagers overnight, hide like counts, and check ages at the door. The headlines could not agree on what had happened. A liability milestone, one wire called it. A Big Tobacco moment, said another. A win for the states, said a third.
Then Nature reported what the researchers who study these platforms actually think, and the verdict was quieter. The age checks, they said, "don't work well." The promised safeguards are unlikely to change what a thirteen-year-old opens the app and sees. The money is certain. The protection is a hope.
Jeremiah watched a nation do this with a wound.
Its healers dressed a deep injury as if it were a scratch and announced peace over a body that was still bleeding. Everyone got to feel the crisis was handled. Nobody had to do the harder thing, which was to stop the bleeding.
The prophet is exact about why the lie held.
Jeremiah 6:13"For from the least of them even to the greatest of them, everyone is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even to the priest, everyone deals falsely.
The greed runs from the least to the greatest, from the boardroom down to the rest of us who keep refreshing the feed. A whole economy learned to profit and call it fine.
A settlement this size is not too small to matter, and that is the trap. The number is so large it feels like justice, which is how you buy the word peace without buying the thing it names. What a child meets on the screen tomorrow morning is the only place the wound was ever going to close.
