Biologists thought the cat family was fully counted a hundred years ago. A small spotted animal in the Bolivian cloud forest, already known to the people there, disagreed.

On September 17, 2026, a team writing in *Current Biology* did something no biologist had pulled off in more than a hundred years. They named a new wild cat. It is called *Leopardus tilcayo*, it is smaller than the cat asleep on your couch, it is spotted like a leopard, and it lives in the cloud forests of the Bolivian Yungas.
The find was half accident. Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz was volunteering at an animal sanctuary when a man walked in carrying one of the cats, and she realized it matched no tiger cat she knew. Genetic work on 38 cats followed, and South America's tiger cats turned out to be five species where scientists had counted one.
The tilcayo was never really lost. The people of the Yungas have called it that for generations. Science just showed up last.
Job's friends had spent chapters explaining his own suffering back to him, certain they had the world mapped. He tells them to go ask the animals, because the birds and the fish know things their confident theology had missed. It reads almost as a dare. A hundred years after biologists declared the cat family fully counted, a small spotted animal walks out of a cloud forest and makes his point for him.
In Genesis the wild animals arrive on the sixth day, made and accounted for long before any human stood there to name them or find a use for them.

Nogales-Ascarrunz said the discovery "shows how much we still have to learn about the biodiversity around us." Her catalogue of the world's cats had been closed for a century. It turns out the world was never asked.
