The eclipse arrived on schedule, and Spain wept anyway

On the evening of August 12, in northern Spain, a few million people watched the sun go wrong. The light thinned to the color of an old photograph. The sun sat low, and for under two minutes the corona hung like a hole cut in the sky. People who had driven hours applauded. Some wept. It was mainland Europe's first total eclipse in twenty-seven years, Spain's first in over a century.

None of it surprised anyone. NASA had the path drawn to the kilometer and the timing to the second, years ahead. The moment of totality was settled fact before most of the crowd was born. We have gotten very good at the sky.

In an old scene, God answers a suffering man with a tour of the sky instead of an explanation. In verse 31 the voice from the storm asks Job whether he can bind the Pleiades or loosen the cords of Orion. Then it asks whether he knows the ordinances that run the heavens. The questions are built to be unanswerable, meant to cut a man to size.

In the narrow sense, we can answer now. We charted Orion and timed the shadow to the second.

The storm asked two things, though, and the second still stands. Knowing the ordinance is not the same as holding the reins. We read the timetable. We do not run the train. A crowd that could have recited the ephemeris still gasped and wept and went silent when the light left.

There is an older way of seeing the same sky.

That declaration never waited on our ignorance, and it did not fall silent when we learned to predict it. Tonight the crowd stood inside a shadow they had seen coming for years, and it stopped them cold. Knowledge was never what stood between us and wonder.
