Kabul celebrated five years while its women were shut out

On August 15, exactly five years after the Taliban rolled back into Kabul, the government threw itself an anniversary. Flags went up across the capital. New murals read "Independence is a sign of dignity." Officials packed the Loya Jirga hall for speeches about liberation, and a cricket match drew crowds. No women sat in the hall. None were allowed at the match.

Outside, Afghan women told foreign reporters what five years had cost them, and many said it in whispers. Classrooms shut. Jobs gone. Clinics they can no longer reach. More than a hundred decrees now govern where a woman may walk and whether she may learn. Afghanistan is the only country on earth that bars girls from school past the sixth grade.

The chapter people quote for the ideal wife opens somewhere less comfortable. A mother is teaching her son how to be a king, and the lesson comes down to the people with no voice: speak for those who cannot speak, judge fairly for the ones with no standing. She measures a crown by a single test. What happens to those who cannot defend themselves.

Jesus turned that same measure into a parable in Luke 18. A widow with no leverage wears down a judge who fears no one, until he rules for her just to be rid of her. Then he makes the turn.

Her only power was that she would not stop asking.

Five years is exactly long enough for the world to stop watching. The cameras came for the anniversary and will leave with it. The women will keep asking long after the cameras go. Being heard is the one part they cannot do alone.
