A young customer filmed Mary Ellen Eron, 85, hauling a trash bag in a Tennessee theater. Within days, 7,500 strangers had paid for her retirement.

May the LORD repay your work, and may you receive a rich reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have taken refuge

Ruth 2:12

Brooklyn Green did not know Mary Ellen Eron's name. She had just watched a movie with her grandparents in Maryville, Tennessee, when she saw an 85-year-old woman pushing a cleaning cart and hauling a black trash bag down the aisle. She filmed twelve seconds, drove home, and started a GoFundMe. Seven thousand five hundred strangers sent $146,317.

The Ruth story turns on the same gesture. Boaz walks his field and notices someone gleaning at the edges. He asks who she is. He goes further than the law required, telling his men to leave extra grain behind on purpose. The kindness is specific and it is costly and it is aimed at a person whose name he had to ask for.

Eron has worked in theaters for forty-five years. She volunteers with the homeless. She called it a blessing from the Lord. None of that explains why an 85-year-old was still emptying trash on a Saturday night. Both things can sit on the table at once.
