1 Kings 21:3

1 Kings 21:3. The Verse of the Day for Tuesday, August 4, 2026, with a short reflection.

May Yahweh forbid me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers to you!

1 Kings 21:3

What this verse means

Naboth refuses to sell his family's vineyard to King Ahab because, under Israel's law, ancestral land was a trust from God rather than simply property to trade away.

King Ahab offers Naboth a fair deal for his vineyard, either a better one or its value in silver, and Naboth still says no. In ancient Israel, land was tied to family and tribe and understood as an inheritance from God, held in trust across generations rather than owned outright (see Leviticus 25). To sell it off forever was to give away something that was never fully his to give.

His refusal sets the rest of the story in motion. Ahab's wife Jezebel arranges for Naboth to be falsely accused and killed so the king can take the land, and a prophet is sent to pronounce judgment. The verse marks the line the powerful were not supposed to cross: a person's inheritance was protected, even from a king.
