What this verse means
It describes someone sending a hungry, poorly clothed believer away with a warm blessing and no help, the scene behind James's question of what such faith is worth.
This line comes from a letter by James, a leader of the earliest church in Jerusalem, written to Christian communities scattered across the Roman world. His letter is famously practical. Here he sketches a small scene: a brother or sister with no warm clothes and nothing to eat, and a fellow believer who sends them off with a warm blessing, roughly "stay warm and eat well," while handing them nothing.
The next verse asks the question the scene was built for: what good is that? James has no quarrel with kind words. His target is kindness that stops at words. In verse 17 he draws the conclusion his letter is known for: faith that never turns into action is dead.
