Verse of the Day — Monday, September 7, 2026
2 Timothy 2:9
2 Timothy 2:9. The Verse of the Day for Monday, September 7, 2026, with a short reflection.
I suffer hardship to the point of chains as a criminal. But God's word isn't chained.
2 Timothy 2:9
What this verse means
Paul, chained in a Roman prison as a criminal, insists that the message he preaches cannot be chained.
This is likely the last of Paul's surviving letters, written to his younger colleague Timothy while Paul awaited execution in Rome. He names his situation without self-pity: hardship 'to the point of chains as a criminal,' the word used for common lawbreakers. Then comes the contrast that carries the verse: God's word is not in custody.
Paul had watched it happen for years. Letters written from prison cells circulated through cities he could no longer visit; the message kept traveling in the people who carried it. Rome could hold the messenger. It never managed to hold the message.
