Verse of the Day — Monday, September 28, 2026

Psalm 68 is a victory song. Most of it pictures God as a mighty king on the move, scattering his enemies and marching through the wilderness while the mountains shake. It is loud, triumphant poetry about power.

Then, in the middle of all that grandeur, it says something surprising about what that power is for. This God, high in his holy home, bends down to the people at the very bottom: the orphan with no father, the widow with no husband, the person who is completely alone.

In the world of the psalm, those were exactly the people no one spoke up for. A widow or an orphan had no standing and no protector. The word translated “defender” is stronger than it sounds; it carries the sense of a judge who takes up their case. This is more than feeling sorry for them. God steps in as the one who argues on their side.

The next line says God “sets the lonely in families,” or settles the solitary in a home. The word behind it means both a house and a household, a roof and a people to belong to. The promise is that the person with no one is given both.

Put together, these lines make one claim about God's character. His power and his tenderness are not two different things. The same God big enough to shake mountains is the God who notices the one person everyone else has overlooked.
