What this verse means
It is one of the Ten Commandments, telling the people just freed from Egypt to give their father and mother real weight and respect, with the promise that a people who do so will live long and secure in the land God is giving them.
This is one of the Ten Commandments. Israel has just come out of slavery in Egypt, and the people are gathered at the foot of Mount Sinai. God is speaking to them directly, laying out how they are to live now that they belong to him.
The commandments come in two groups. The first few are about how the people are to treat God. Then the list turns to how they treat each other, and this is the first one in that group. Honoring your parents sits right on the hinge between the two.
The word behind "honor" comes from a root that means heavy or weighty. To honor someone is to treat them as weighty, to give them real weight in your life instead of brushing them aside. It asks for more than a young child doing as it is told. It means holding your father and mother in respect and taking them seriously for as long as they live.
In that world, the command spoke mostly to grown adults. A large part of its force fell on caring for parents once they were old and could no longer work or provide for themselves. Elderly parents leaned on their grown children to be looked after, and this told those children to carry that weight faithfully.
This is the one commandment on the list that comes with a promise attached: "that your days may be long in the land." The promise is spoken to the whole people. A community where each generation gave weight to the one before it would hold together and stay rooted in the land God was giving them. Where that care fell apart, the whole people were left unsteady.
