Mark 10:25
Mark 10:25. The Verse of the Day for Friday, October 9, 2026, with a short reflection.
It is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter into God’s Kingdom.
Mark 10:25
What this verse means
Jesus uses a deliberately absurd picture, a camel squeezing through the eye of a sewing needle, to say that no one, and especially someone holding tightly to wealth, can get into God's kingdom on their own strength, which is why he goes on to say that only God makes it possible.
This line comes right after one of the saddest encounters in the Gospels. A man runs up to Jesus, kneels in the road, and asks what he has to do to inherit eternal life. Jesus points him to the commandments, and the man says he has kept them since he was young. Mark then says that Jesus looked at him and loved him, and told him there was one thing left: sell what he owned, give the money to the poor, and come follow him. The man's face fell, and he walked away grieving, because he had a great deal of property.
So Jesus turns to his disciples and says how hard it is for people with wealth to enter the kingdom of God. The disciples are stunned, because in their world riches were often taken as a sign that God was pleased with you. If the blessed have trouble getting in, what hope is there for anyone else? Jesus doesn't soften it. He calls them "children," says again how hard it is, and then gives them this picture.
The camel was the biggest animal people in that region saw every day, and the eye of a needle was about the smallest opening they could think of. Putting the two together is meant to sound ridiculous, the kind of exaggeration that makes people laugh and then go quiet.
You may have heard that there was a small city gate called "the Eye of the Needle" that camels could only pass through by kneeling, but there is no good evidence such a gate existed, and that story makes the saying sound difficult when Jesus means it to sound impossible. The word in the original Greek is the ordinary word for a sewing needle.
The disciples hear it that way, which is why they ask, "Then who can be saved?" Jesus looks at them and answers that for people it is impossible, but not for God, because all things are possible with God. That is where the whole conversation has been heading. The rich man was hoping there was something he could do, and the one thing asked of him was to let go of what he was holding and trust Jesus instead. The camel and the needle show that getting into God's kingdom was never something a person could manage alone, rich or poor, and that it comes as God's gift.
