James 4:14
James 4:14. The Verse of the Day for Wednesday, October 28, 2026, with a short reflection.
You don't know what your life will be like tomorrow. For what is your life? For you are a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.
James 4:14
What this verse means
James is reminding people who confidently plan their business ventures a year ahead that no one knows what tomorrow holds, because a human life is as brief and fragile as a puff of mist that shows up for a moment and then disappears.
James is writing a letter to early Christians scattered across different places, and much of it is blunt, practical talk about how faith shows up in everyday life. In this part of chapter 4 he turns to a particular kind of person: the merchant who sits down and maps out the future. He even quotes them, saying, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there, trade, and make a profit."
There is nothing wrong with planning a trip or running a business, and James doesn't say there is. What catches his attention is the tone, because these people talk as if the next year already belongs to them. So he stops them in the middle of their plans with a simple fact: you don't even know what tomorrow will bring.
Then he asks a question that hangs in the air for a second, "What is your life?" and answers it with a picture. The word he uses in the original Greek means a vapor or a puff of steam, the kind of thing you see when you breathe out on a cold morning or when smoke rises from a fire. It's there, you can see it, and a moment later it's gone. That is how short and uncertain a human life is, James says, even when it feels solid from the inside.
The verses right after this one finish the thought. James says that instead of talking that way, people should say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that," and he calls their confident boasting about the future a kind of arrogance. So verse 14 is the hinge of the passage: it sets the brief, fragile reality of a human life next to the big, sure plans people make, and lets the gap between them speak for itself.
