On September 14, 2026, Michael J. Fox accepted the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award at the 78th Emmy Awards. Julianna Margulies handed it to him, and the room stood twice. He was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson's in 1991, at 29. He is 65 now. The disease has had thirty-five years to do its work, and it has done it in public.
What deserves attention is the register of his remarks. He made no attempt to soften the decline. "Of course, things have gotten harder over the years," he said. In the same breath, without shifting his tone, he said a cure was nearer than it has ever been. "We're getting close. We're seeing more research breakthroughs every year." Two facts, held at once.
It would be easy to file this under grit, or under the bright performance public figures are expected to give. It is neither. The foundation that carries his name has funded more than $3 billion in Parkinson's research, the largest nonprofit funder of that research in the world. He built it after the illness took the acting career that made him famous. The losses are documented. So is the work.
Paul wrote his line about the outer self wasting while the inner self is renewed day by day. He wrote it from a body that had been beaten, jailed, and worn thin. Earlier in the same passage, he set down what that pressure felt like from the inside.

That list names the pressure before it names the survival. Pressed, perplexed, pursued, struck down, and not destroyed. Fox's two sentences move the same way. He says out loud what the disease is taking, and then he refuses to let that be the whole account. The body is going. The man reporting on it is not.
