The Solitude Trend That Films Everything but the Way Back

On June 15, 2026, the Guardian ran a column on what it called "loneliness influencers" and named the unease exactly: the videos carry an air of "cosy defeatism." By this summer the same trend had reached the BBC, DW, and Vox, and the coverage split cleanly. Where the Guardian saw resignation dressed as contentment, the BBC saw women who had made an honest peace. "We are not lonely."

They are not selling misery. Lana Isa, Paulina Cee, Devon Noehring and others film the small competence of a life lived alone. No friends, no dating, no kids. The phrase that recurs is "alone, not lonely," and millions watch because it names two true things at once. Solitude can restore you. The always-connected, always-performing life is exhausting to keep up.

What the clips cannot settle is whether the peace is earned or performed, and that unsettled question is the whole story.

The morning he rose before light and went out to a deserted place, he went there to pray, and then he returned to the people who were looking for him. That is the seam this trend runs along. Chosen aloneness that returns you is one thing. Aloneness with no way back is another.

The oldest line on the subject refuses to flatter either one:

It was spoken over a man who had God, and a garden, and still lacked something. The critics warning of an isolation epidemic are quoting Genesis without knowing it. So are the women who found something real in a room alone and carried it to an audience of millions. He went out into the dark alone, and then he went back. The trend keeps its camera on the going out. Whether there is a coming back is the part it never films.
