On August 13, NPR reported that the Commodity Futures Trading Commission is examining a new kind of contract. On a "mention market," you bet on whether a public figure will say a particular word. The trigger sat close to the podium. Kalshi's own surveillance flagged Gabriel Perez, the president's teleprompter operator, who had won more than $100,000 wagering on what the president would say, the State of the Union included. The company pulled its sports word-bets, the contracts that had been driving most of its volume, while regulators asked whether a market a single mouth can settle is a market at all.
Strip the scandal away and something stranger is left. A sentence nobody has spoken yet is now an asset you can hold.
Speech is what we bless with, promise with, confess with. It has become the underlying for a derivative.
Jesus's warning about idle words reads differently this week. He is not describing a marketplace. He is saying speech already carries weight, that by our words we are justified or condemned (verse 37), and that a reckoning was fixed to them long before Kalshi built a faster, cash-settled version of one.
He also named the force that keeps enlarging its claim.

Mammon does not check your bank balance before it moves in. It has taken land, labor, and attention, and now it reaches for the next word out of a stranger's mouth. Perez is not the villain in a story about billionaires. He is a wage-earner who saw a price on someone's speech and could not look away, which makes him most of us with an app open.
A market can put a number on a word for one night. It still cannot tell you what a word is worth.
