Ruth 1:8
Ruth 1:8. The Verse of the Day for Saturday, August 29, 2026, with a short reflection.
Go, return each of you to her mother's house. May Yahweh deal kindly with you, as you have dealt with the dead and with me.
Ruth 1:8
What this verse means
Naomi, having lost her husband and both sons, blesses her two widowed daughters-in-law and urges them to go back to their own families rather than bind their futures to hers.
Naomi was an Israelite who had moved to Moab with her husband and two sons during a famine. All three men died there, leaving her with her sons' widows, Orpah and Ruth, both Moabite women. When Naomi hears the famine at home has passed, she sets out for Bethlehem, and at the edge of the road she stops the two younger women. They are not her people, and following her offers them nothing.
So she blesses them and tells them to return to their mothers' homes, where they might marry again and be safe. The blessing looks back at the kindness they had already shown her family and herself. It is a generous, surprising moment: the person with the most to gain from their loyalty is the one setting them free to leave.
