What this verse means
God rejects Israel's religious festivals and asks instead for justice that flows constantly, like a river that never runs dry.
Amos worked as a shepherd. He was not a priest or a palace prophet, just a man God sent to preach in a country that was doing well. Business was strong, the temples were busy, and the people kept every religious festival on the calendar. From the outside, it looked like a faithful nation.
Underneath, the courts were bent. Judges took bribes. Honest people lost their cases, and the poor were turned away when they came looking for help. So God says something shocking. He tells the people to stop. Stop the festivals, the offerings, the singing. He will not even listen to the music anymore. To him it has all become noise, because the worship and the everyday unfairness were going on side by side.
Then comes this verse, and after all that refusing, it lands like relief. What God actually wants is justice, and he pictures it as water. In that dry country, most streambeds sat empty most of the year and filled up only right after a rain. Amos does not want justice like that, here one week and gone the next. He wants a river that never dries up, a stream that keeps running in every season.
The picture leaves a plain question for anyone who hears it. In this chapter, justice is measured by one thing: whether it actually reaches the person who needs it. Full temples and beautiful songs do not settle the account if the poor still lose in court. A river is only a river if the water gets all the way down.
