What this verse means
After Cain murders his brother Abel and pretends to know nothing, God says Abel's blood is crying out from the ground, meaning the killing cannot be hidden and the life that was taken still calls for justice.
This is one of the oldest stories in the Bible. Cain and Abel are the first two brothers ever born. Cain grows jealous when God favors his brother's offering, lures Abel out to a field, and kills him. When God asks where Abel is, Cain lies and brushes him off with a famous line, “Am I my brother's keeper?” God's reply is this verse. The picture is vivid: Abel's spilled blood has a voice, and it is calling out from the very ground that soaked it up.
The point is that a killing is never invisible to God, however carefully it is covered over. The life that was taken still counts, and it still cries out. What is striking is what God does next in the same chapter. Even after this, the murderer is not executed. God places a mark on Cain to keep anyone who finds him from killing him in turn. The blood calls for justice, and God answers it without simply adding a second death to the first.
