God's Kingdom is as if a man should cast seed on the earth, and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, though he doesn't know how.

What this verse means
Jesus compares God's kingdom to a seed that grows on its own while the farmer sleeps, a picture of growth that comes from God rather than from human effort.
This is one of several short farming parables Jesus tells in Mark 4, speaking to crowds beside the Sea of Galilee. A man plants seed and then gets on with ordinary life, sleeping at night and rising by day, while under the soil the seed does what he cannot make it do. He does not understand how it happens, and he does not need to. The earth brings the crop along by itself, stage by stage, until it is ready to be cut.
The subject is the kingdom of God, and Jesus says it grows the way that seed grows: on its own timing, by a power the farmer never provides. The farmer's part is to plant and, when the grain is ripe, to gather. Everything in between belongs to God. For anyone anxious to force results, it is an unusual comfort, that the most important growth is already underway and does not rest on them.
